Scam Baiting... The Facebook Adventure!

It's been several years since my last foray into scammer baiting, but the opportunity presented itself recently, and I just had to have another go at it. My daughter's Facebook account got hijacked. The scumbag also got into her email; actually, I'm not sure which got hit first, but the outcome was that they changed the passwords for both accounts, changed the email address to a new one of their own choosing, and they added a forwarder to her e-mail to redirect all her mail to theirs. Then they sent out messages to all her friends with a sad story to try to get money from them.

Of course I decided to answer the plea. What follows is the actual conversation. I will color-code each character's text as they show up, so you should be able to follow it. The scammer's text will be in black. Let's begin....

Mar 9 - 11:09 AM:

Hello,

How are you doing today? hope you are well and fine, I'm writing this letter to you with tears in my eyes, My family and I came down here to Scotland, United Kingdom for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed,all cash,credit card and cell were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our life and passports with us.

We've been to the embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all they asked us to wait for 3weeks which we can not and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills.

Am freaked out at the moment and i need a quick loan from you.

Anyone who knows Kate can tell you she never calls herself "Katherine," as that might lead somebody to call her "Kathy" and she would hate that. She's Kate or Katie. By the time I got this email, I'd already been trying to fix her accounts for about a half-hour. I respond:

In order to reduce confusion, I'm going to post parallel columns for the conversation; on the left, in orange, is correspondence from "Kate's brother, Jim" and on the right, in blue, is mail from "Kate's uncle Jimmy" to our favorite Nigerian Scammer (a friend did an IP trace on the mail he received, and the message originated from a server at 31 B Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. It pays to have tech-savvy friends.)

You're kidding, right? I have about $100 to last until the 15th. I was going to hit Dad up for a loan on Saturday. I called uncle Jimmy, and he said he was already talking to you and has everything handled. His friend Al is going to take care of your problem.

Why aren't Mom and Dad taking care of this? It seems very weird to me.

Wow. You're in trouble! Mom's really pissed off, she called me wanting to know where you are. I said I don't know. This better be worth it. If they find out you LEFT THE COUNTRY without telling them, they are going to so kill you. I will try to cover for you, but you better get back here ASAP before they call the cops. Whatever you do, you better be straight with uncle Jimmy or he'll kill you too, but listen, he bailed me out of a few spots before. He's a good guy and you can trust him, but you better tell him the truth.

Who are you there with, and what do you need all this money for? How much trouble are you in? What should I tell Mom & Dad when they call back?

Now I'm worried. Be careful.

I did an IP trace on your email and found out it's coming from Nigeria. I know it's a scam, and I want in on it. My parents have a lot of money, and they cut me off when I quit school. If I can get them to send you the money, will you split it with me? I think we can get them to pay $10,000 if I convince them that Kate is really over there. I can track her down and keep her out of the way until we're done. So what do you say? $5000 for you and $5000 for me. If we work together, we might be able to get even more.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I had a date and it went late. ;)

I'm trying to figure out the best way to pull this off, but here's what I know so far. The parents are in New York for another week, and my uncle isn't going to give me the money to send to Kate, he will want to send it himself. I think they have heard enough warnings about fraud to not trust Western Union (over here, the only people who use it are criminals and illegal aliens sending money back to Mexico), so I think we need to find another way to transfer the money. I'll work on that. Meanwhile, don't push my uncle too hard or he might get suspicious.

Now, once he sends the money, how do we split it? We need some way to trust each other. If he sends it to you, how do I know you will send me my share, and if he gives it to me, you would have the same concern, right? Let me think about this a little more. I'm sure there is a way we can do it.

My real name is Jim MacQuarrie. I have the same name as my uncle, my grandfather and a lot of my cousins. For some reason this family just loves that name. It gets very confusing for other people all the time. People always think they are talking to my cousin or my uncle or somebody. It's one of the things I hate about my family. They are such weirdos.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to call you. I don't want the call to show up on the home phone bill, and I don't have a cell phone right now (it fell out of my pocket into the toilet. I know, I'm an idiot). We don't have any pay phones around here, so I'll have to think of another way to call you. It might be a problem with the time difference, you're practically on teh other side of the world, so it's night here when its daytime there.

I'm not on Facebook. I don't trust it. The people who invented it have ties to the CIA and I don't want to give them all that information.

Anyway, I'm working on my uncle to get him to do something before my parents get back in town. If he sends the money they will have to pay him back. I think we're getting close. One of the difficulties is that the crazy old coot lives on top of a mountain about an hour outside of a tiny little town so small it doesn't even have a Walmart, and he doesn't understand the internet very well. He only uses it to do email and play fantasy baseball with his friends. I think I can convince him to write me a check, then I'll deposit it in my account and send you half. Your job is to make it look like I sent the whole thing to Katie in Scotland. Okay?

It's almost midnight there, so there's no point in doing anything until morning. I talked to my bank, and all of this is really simple. Tomorrow, he will pick you up at your hotel and take you to his place. He'll put you up until it's time for your flight back home. There's no need for a wire transfer. I can pay the hotel bill directly from my online checking account, Al can give your dad money for necessities, your parents already have your return plane tickets. Everything's fine. There's no need to panic. Tell your dad to call me. I'm sure the hotel has a phone. Just tell your dad to call me; the call will go on the hotel bill.

I've already let her know that you aren't there with your parents, so don't worry about that. She will meet Al and he'll take her to a bank where she can withdraw the money you need, then they will go to the hotel and meet you.

Well, it didn't go well with my uncle yesterday. By the time I got there, one of his email friends told him that it was a scam. He's not going to wire any money anywhere. We have to think of something else.

I think we can get money directly from my parents, but we have to be smart about it. They aren't going to believe any "emergency" emails about people being stuck anywhere, so that won't work. But they are good and compassionate people and very supportive of their church, so an appeal for charity might take them in. I have an idea.

Send my mom an e-mail and tell her you are a missionary working with underprivileged kids in some poor country over there. Don't make it Nigeria, because the news here has told everyone about fake emails from Nigeria. Maybe Uganda or Kenya would be good. Tell her that you got her email address from the District Office of the Church of Christ, and your organization has started a new program for short-term missionary trips for young people, and you want to let her know about it in case she has children that would benefit from seeing another country and helping the poor. Say that the program is only open to people under 25. Make up a good name for your church.

Don't send it from Katie's address. Use a different one.

When she gets it, I'm sure she will mention it to me. I will convince her that Kate and I should both go, and I'll get her to email you back for the details and costs, and we'll go from there. I'll bet we can talk her into sponsoring another student or two as well. If we tell her that the trip costs $2500 each, and we get her to pay for Kate, me, and two other kids, that's $10,000.

Meanwhile, Kate is extremely frustrated that she can't get onto Facebook after nearly a week. I try again to contact them, then suddenly have an inspiration. I fire off an email:

Imagine my surprise when he responds:

Oh am so sorry for that, this is her facebook account password.. ( richman10 ) if this is not working out, let her get back to me with her facebook email address to help out... Okay.

We immediately go to Facebook and try to log in. The account is disabled. So then I have another idea; I go to Yahoo and try to log into "Kate's" Rocketmail account. Lo and behold, it works! We start reading all the emails he's received from our friends, and his responses, then go to the control panel and change his password from "richman10" to "igotchusucka" and start poking around to see what else we can do. Unfortunately, after a few minutes of these shenanigans, we get logged out. Apparently, Jeff got a notification via an alternate email address, and he changed his password to something else. Time for some damage control:

She said that won't work. She can't use her old email anymore, it won't let her in. I'm going to let her solve her own problem there, I can't waste time trying to fix her accounts.

By the way, you better go change your email password; she said she tried the password there and it worked. She was able to see your email. I sure hope she didn't read our emails. I'd hate to see this whole deal get messed up by my nosy sister.

Oh i also notify that someone get into the account with the password i gave you to give to your sister so she can set her face-book account back, But i am a smart guy lol i got the notification immediately and do the necessary this on the account by changing the password to the account and also change some details in the account too. Nevertheless i will get a new yahoo account to use for our personal communication so our deal can be secret between you and I..
